Summer is all about looking hot while staying cool. Fortunately, this year’s looks are very wearable and would work well with a wide range of body types and personalities. Plus, these style suggestions are easy to pull off and they’ll keep you cool as the temperatures rise. The last thing you want is to feel claustrophobic or stuck (literally) to your clothes, so billowy and breezy choices are the way to go. Leave the form-fitting looks for after the sun goes down, along with the high heels, and you’ll avoid common fashion faux pas that summer weather tends to cause. Below are a few of my favourites that should be both cool and flattering.
Gaga for Gingham
This cute, versatile checked pattern is reminiscent of picnics in the park and other warm weather outings, yet it would also look great incorporated into a daytime work wardrobe. For casual outings, Lyst’s team of stylists suggest choosing dresses in this pattern and accessorise with a cute pair of slip-on style sneakers and rucksack purse. For the office, choose blue gingham trousers and pair with a crisp white-button down for a fresh office look.
Glamorous Glitter
Perfect for going out on those balmy summer nights is the sequin trend that was so popular on the SS 2016 runways. Part of several designers’ resort wear collections, WWD’s editors are huge fans of all things that sparkle. From form-fitting and sequin-embellished tanks that would look great tucked into maxi skirts, to sparkly skinny pants paired with a blazer, this is definitely a wearable trend. Also consider incorporating some glitter into the mix with your accessories. A thin belt, pair of shoes, or headband would all be great ways to easily incorporate some glamorous glitter.
Striking Stripes
Bold and bright are the two key words here when it comes to how the runway shows suggest wearing your stripes this season. I recommend pulling these off by choosing vertical when you want to elongate your body, and horizontal when you want to accentuate an area, like your bust. Have fun with colour and don’t shy away from wide lines—pinstripes need not apply. Whether it’s in the form of a tee to pair with shorts, or a skirt that’s workplace worthy, this is definitely a great summer trend that offers many options.
Sporty Mesh
Mesh that was once popular in the ’90s has made a comeback for spring and summer. This sheer netting is a great choice for wearing with bandeau tops or even as swimsuit coverups. Play with colour by layering a white mesh tank over a solid navy blue tank and pairing with white wide leg trousers for a chic take on the season’s mesh trend.
Romantic Ruffles
Whether it’s the flouncy wave of a hemline or the delicate detail on the sleeve of a tank, ruffles are one of Glamour’s favorite seasonal trends. Flirty and feminine, this embellishment would look great on a chiffon blouse for work, or in the form of a maxi dress that’s perfect for wearing to brunch or a daytime wedding. Don’t forget to accessorise with some of summer’s other trends, like a pair of statement earrings and a mini handbag.
With so many great trends that are both wearable and warm weather friendly, there’s no excuse for not trying a few of these for yourself!
